Profile
Hello! :)
My name is Katie Ka’ahanui, and I am a 2009 graduate of Kalani High School. I am currently attending Kapiolani Community College with the intent of double majoring in Journalism and Business. My career goal is to create a local publication dedicated to personal wellness and inspiring the youth of Hawaii to become positive contributors to their communities.
I am an avid reader, an English buff, and have a great love for writing. Throughout high school, I served as an advisor for Sassy & G Magazine’s Teen Board where I was allowed the opportunity to create stories pertaining to adolescent and young adult issues in Hawaii. It was through this that I discovered my love for being able to impact people through my writing, and have since then felt extremely determined to pursue my education in Journalism.
I feel beyond blessed and extremely fortunate to be able to be a part of ClubCharm. During the ages of 7-12, the way girls perceive themselves and their importance in the world around them is critical to their self confidence. These are the years where outside influences are extremely strong and the weight of the messages from TV, magazines and the radio can sometimes seem too much to deal with. (Oh, how we all know that feeling too well!)
I believe in always staying true to yourself and listening to your “heart song” no matter what- and ClubCharm gives girls the opportunity to find their inner heart songs… and dance to it. It is opportunities like this that will create a future full of confident, strong young women.
I am extremely passionate about working with youth and helping them to develop leadership skills and self confidence to make the right choices and be advocates for change in their communities. I am currently on the board for REAL, Hawaii’s youth movement against the tobacco industry. I worked with M.A.D.D and started Kalani High School’s first Youth in Action program that goes out into the community and advocates against the dangers of underage drinking. I believe that when we instill these values in youth while they're still young, we are able to be create a solid foundation for them grow up and be effective, confident leaders.
I enjoy reading books of all kinds (especially anything by Deepak Chopra and James Patterson), Indian food, inspirational quotes, Pilates, yoga, baking, music, cultural studies, and meeting new people.
Some of my favorite quotes:
“Change your thoughts, and change your world.” – Norman Vincent Peale
“My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment. -Oprah Winfrey
“Above all, be true to yourself- If you can’t put your heart into it, take yourself out of it.”
